Résumés and Cover Letters

A résumé should not be an autobiography. Rather, it is an advertisement that sells your skills and accomplishments to an employer. If you have never created a résumé, the links below will help you get started. The University Career Services staff will be happy to critique your draft and make suggestions on any improvements that you might need to make. Every résumé that you mail, email or fax should be accompanied by a cover letter. This is the formal business document stating the position for which you are applying and expanding on your most important qualifications as stated in your résumé.

Employers are split about 50/50 on whether they read the resume or the cover letter first. This means that you need to put a "hook" in both documents so that whichever one they read first, you have gained their interest.

Your cover letter should be focused on a specific occupation and type of employer/position based on your research. It must also be as specific as possible in addressing an employer's requirements. A generic, "To whom it may concern," cover letter is not generally very effective. It needs to be addressed to a specific person and relate your interest, skills and qualities in terms of what the employer is seeking.
